Nestled away in University Village is a quaint delicatessen that’s over 50 years old. Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli opened shortly after World War II by current owner, Ken Raskin’s, Russian-born grandfather. Ken and two of his sons walk around the restaurant greeting customers and making certain that they’ve eaten to their hearts content. The family-run cafeteria is one of the last of its kind, serving soup, a number of salads and almost every sandwich one could imagine. Known for their massive signature sandwich, the Corned Beef Reuben, and their potato pancakes, it’s hard to consider the other scrumptious sandwiches of the day and save room for cake, pie or pudding for dessert.
Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli is located at 1141 S. Jefferson (312.939.2855) and offers free valet parking. Open Mon.–Sat., 6am–8pm. Their second location is at Midway Airport in Concourse A, 773.948.6300, mannysdeli.com.
