Nestled away in University Village is a quaint delicatessen that’s over 50 years old. Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli opened shortly after World War II by current owner, Ken Raskin’s, Russian-born grandfather. Ken and two of his sons walk around the restaurant greeting customers and making certain that they’ve eaten to their hearts content. The family-run cafeteria is one of the last of its kind, serving soup, a number of salads and almost every sandwich one could imagine. Known for their massive signature sandwich, the Corned Beef Reuben, and their potato pancakes, it’s hard to consider the other scrumptious sandwiches of the day and save room for cake, pie or pudding for dessert.

Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli is located at 1141 S. Jefferson (312.939.2855) and offers free valet parking. Open Mon.–Sat., 6am–8pm. Their second location is at Midway Airport in Concourse A, 773.948.6300, mannysdeli.com.

We're All In This Room Together...And Loving It

Most of the time, when people say, "We're in this together," that implies something negative is happening. That's certainly not the case in The Second City Etc.'s production, We're All In This Room Together. The Second City may have been around for 50 years, but this performance is new and fresh.

The show runs for three acts. The first two include six actors whose talents range from comedic songs to funny one-liners and noises, but they all have one thing in common; hilarity. They did pull a visitor on stage and incorporate some improv comedy but for the most part, the performance in the first two acts stays the same for each show. The third act was improv only and included the same performers as well as two guests from other productions. The performers seamlessly transition between skits and have excellent chemistry.

The Second City boasts a long list of famous alumni including Tina Fey, Mike Myers and Steven Colbert. Its easy to believe that any of these young talented sketch artists will follow in their footsteps.

The show runs Thurs., 8pm; Fri.–Sat. 8pm & 11pm; Sun., 7pm. Tickets range between $23 and $28. 1616 N. Wells, 312.337.3992.

Midnight In Chicago

Stepping into Untitled (111 W. Kinzie) is similar to being taken back to the roaring twenties. When entering this speakeasy, one steps through a door next a drugstore and descends a staircase entering a posh, elegant atmosphere.
The ambiance is trendy. Live jazz and big band music plays in the background while patrons sit around several large tables sipping cocktails. (Sadly, F. Scott Fitzgerald was not one of them.)

The cocktail menu has the perfect balance of lighter and heavier drinks. Don Patricio's Pinkie Ring and Speak Sleazy are two winners for lighter cocktails. Scotch and bourbon drinkers will like Pistol Smoke and Bootlegger's Breakfast and will revel in the large selection of aged scotches and bourbons available.

The dinner menu has a variety of small plates and large plates meant for sharing. The Snow Crab Claws are amazing. The flakey white meat melts in one's mouth and is served in a light garlic sauce. The Bay Scallops tasted so fresh, one might think they were caught that day in Lake Michigan.

Untitled is the perfect place for an upscale dinner or just for sharing a few small plates while having a drink and enjoying the night.

Open Tuesday–Thursday, 4:30pm–1am; Friday, 4:30pm–2am; Saturday, 4:30pm–3am; Sunday, 4:30pm–Midnight. Suggested dress is business casual, no t–shirts, shorts, sandals or gym shoes. Call 312.880.1511 or visit untitledchicago.com for reservations or more information.

The Broadway preproduction of a four time Tony-nominated musical Jekyll & Hyde opened last night and will be playing for two weeks at the Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 W. Randolph).

The performance is based off of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella about a London doctor who promises his mentally ill father that he will find a cure for him during the late 19th century.  Dr. Henry Jekyll believes that he can develop a drug that isolates negative personality traits, making them easier to remove. He proposes his idea to the hospital board, and they refuse to support it. Dr. Jekyll believes so firmly in this drug, that he proceeds with his plan and tests it on himself, which creates his evil alternate personality, Edward Hyde.

The show runs for two weeks of performances. Tickets are $33–$95. Tues.-Fri., 7:30pm; Sat., 2pm and 8pm; Sun., 2pm. Additional performances Sun. March 17 at 7:30pm and Wed. March 20 at 2pm. Call 800.775.2000 for tickets or visit BroadwayInChicago.com.

Tavernita is a great place to go for dinner and a cocktail. This modern restaurant offers a great blend of dishes with Spanish and South American flavors.

With a number of seafood, meat and vegetarian options this is a good place to go for quality food and not be feel stuffed after. Their small plates are perfect for sampling a variety of options and are bound to satisfy every taste. The artichoke salad is a great way to start off the meal followed up by the burrata, a tomato marmalade on a burrata cheese crostini. The creamy cheese melts in your mouth and blends perfectly with the tangy tomato flavoring. The patatas are another original option. The potatoes in combination with the brava sauce, fried egg and spicy chorizo create a delicious dish.

For dessert, our server suggested the fried custard topped with a scoop of almond ice cream and a cinnamon sugar glaze with almond slivers. The result; a delicious, creamy, bowl similar Cinnamon Toast Crunch and a great way to end the evening.

They change their menu frequently and their outdoor section will be a great place to enjoy a fresh cocktail on a summer day.

Tavernita is open for lunch Mon.–Fri., 11:30am–3pm; Brunch, Sun. 11:30am–3pm; Dinner, Sun.–Tues, 5pm–11:30pm; Wed. and Thurs. 5pm–12am; Fri. and Sat., 5pm–1am. 151 W. Erie, 312.274.1111.

In December 1956, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins collaborated for a jam session at Sun Records studio in Memphis before their careers fully ignited. Sam Phillips, deemed “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” brought the four artists together for a recording session, the only one that they would ever do together.

The cast and crew work together in Million Dollar Quartet to tell the story of that legendary night with flashbacks of how Sam Phillips inspired each musician individually. Musical numbers include “Great Balls of Fire,” “Walk the Line,” and “Hound Dog,” where each talented cast-member plays his own instrument.

The Tony-nominated musical has played in Chicago for four years. Although the original cast is on a national tour, you can still experience the excitement at Apollo Theater, 2540 N. Lincoln, 773.935.6100. Shows are Wed., 2 and 7:30pm; Thu., 7:30pm; Fri., 8pm; Sat., 5 and 8pm; Sun., 3:30 and 6:30pm. Tickets run $25 to $80. milliondollarquartetlive.com.
